Hubby and I got up before the crack of dawn yesterday and headed up to Big South Fork State Park. There was a 17.5 mile and 10K trail race happening. Hubby and our friend J were doing the 10K and J’s family from Jamestown were doing the 17.5 mile race. My plan was to get in some hiking, but not miss hubby’s finish.
Here is the start of the race:
As you can tell, it was fairly foggy at the start. Once everyone started, I knew I had a while before their return. I love horses and I had seen the stables on the map, so I took a trail and walked my way over there. Thankfully no one seemed to have a problem with me wandering around, taking pictures, and petting the horses.
I went to another section of the stables where four gentleman were cleaning and saddling their horses. I had taken just a few pictures when one of the horses became skittish. I was worried my camera might be causing it so I stopped taking pictures and just petted the horses. The gentleman getting the mule ready told me the mules feelings were hurt because his picture didn’t get taken. So what did I do?
The mule was very excited to be in the photos.
Sadly for me, but good for the runners that the day stayed foggy, overcast, and cool. I was able to get a few shots of the color changing.
It was absolutely beautiful at Big South Fork. Really nice walkable trails also – also on the horse trails you really had to pay attention to where you were walking.
I almost missed hubby and J finishing because I was in the bathroom. UGH! I got back just in time to watch them finish. They finished before they thought and had actually helped carry a lady back down the trail when she hurt herself. WOOHOO!!! Around noon, they opened up the BBQ lunch that we had paid for and we had a delicious meal. We stayed for the awards ceremony and then head back to Knoxville. After being up since 4:15, I took a glorious 1.5 hour nap and felt much better.
